Barkha, Sushant is NOT the opportunity to spread awareness about mental health! I explain why.

Disclaimer: I am not making any criminal allegations and I am NOT talking on behalf of Sushant Singh Rajput’s father (my father in law). This is an independent opinion and is a response to what was presented by Barkha Dutt (allegedly an audio recording of Susan Walker Moffat, who is alleged to be Sushant’s psychotherapist).

I have been watching everything from the sidelines and analyzing the discussions happening around my brother-in-law’s death.

sush2

Sushant and I in 2014. I saw him last in person in July 2017 on my trip to India.

Sushant and I had a very healthy relationship and most of our conversations were around books and movies. I have known him since 1997 (my 8th grade) since his sister Shweta (my wife now), he and I went to the same school. Shweta and I were in the same grade and he was a grade junior. Whether you believe it or not, he was charming but shy and was known more popularly as Shweta’s little brother amongst my batchmates. Shweta and I had a little bit of chemistry and some batchmates teased us as “Jija-Saala” when we sat together on the school bus. That eventually was proven true in 2007 (thanks to the amazing coincidence that I went to IIT Madras for my undergrad and my wife went to NIFT Madras for hers, which gave us the opportunity to stay in touch and we eventually tied the knot in 2007).  I had moved to the US in 2006 but stayed in touch with Sushant until early 2019 and then we lost touch. Now I can make sense of perhaps what transpired and his loss has left me with immesurable grief.

I am a feminist and I care about women’s issues. My first point is that caring about women’s issues is not incompatible with filing criminal charges against a female suspect. Calling criminal charges against Rhea misogynistic is an incorrect assessment of the situation. While on average, more men tend to engage in criminal behavior, criminality is not outside the purview of women.

My second point is that I do personally believe that there should not be a “special” stigma around mental health issues. Just like physical health, mental health is also an outcome of biology and the environment. The reason I said “special” is that it’s nearly impossible to completely eliminate stigma from health issues. For eg., if there is a person suffering from diabetes, there will be some amount of stigma about his/her lifestyle even if this person was genetically predisposed. Similarly, whether we like it or not, there is no country in the world where stigma around mental health is zero. I live in the United States and there is a tremendous amount of stigma around mental health here. So, even if we are able to bring down the “special” stigma, we might not be able to completely eliminate it. However, since there is an enormous amount of stigma today, mental health information is protected by the law of the land. Disclosing mental health information by a psychotherapist/psychologist is not only unethical but also illegal (except for certain circumstances which don’t apply here). I leave it to my father-in-law to press charges on this matter.

My third point is a question on the validity of Susan’s claims. Diagnosing mental disorders is an arduous task and diagnosing someone Bipolar (I or II) is even more so. Not only do you have to observe the person very closely, but you also have to observe them over long periods of time (it takes six years on average to diagnose after the onset of symptoms). Susan very conveniently diagnoses Sushant in less than two months (perhaps over a couple of appointments), with a life-changing diagnosis. And then she has the audacity to disclose this information in the public domain. If we are to believe Susan, another thing which does become clear is that it was Rhea indeed who was seeking treatment for Sushant and not Sushant himself. Prior to October/November 2019 (and certainly prior to meeting Rhea), as far as I know, no one who has lived with Sushant has ever complained about his mental health, nor has Sushant himself.

My fourth point is questioning Rhea’s role in the matter. I am not using any special information and I am quoting everything available in the public domain. The FIR claims that Sushant was perhaps given psychotropic drugs by Rhea (maybe even without his knowledge). Covert/Surreptitious medication is also perhaps illegal in the 21st century. There could be many explanations of this sudden onset of mental health issues in October/November of 2019. This could be a result of covert medication and withdrawal of psychotropic drugs (perhaps the covert medication stopped during their Europe trip in October 2019 [perhaps because of eating out mostly so no opportunity to covertly medicate him with food? or perhaps intentionally not medicating?], which led to withdrawal symptoms).  And then, he was perhaps taken to the psychotherapist under the pretext of care. Another surprising thing is that setting up appointments and being present at the appointments (both done by Rhea) could be a sign of keeping a tab on Sushant’s conversations with the psychotherapist and keeping evidence of mental health issues so that it can be used later for blackmail or to justify the firm control on his resources. If what was bothering him was Rhea’s gaslighting and blackmail, Sushant probably was not given that privacy to discuss. The more important mental health discussion here could be that of Narcissistic Personality Discorder and/or sociopathy/psychopathy for Rhea.  Sushant seemed to have suffered gaslighting at the hands of Rhea, based on the information in the public domain. Antisocial Personality Disorder is the more technical term for sociopathy/psychopathy and could be potentially diagnosed for Rhea (I am not diagnosing, only suggesting). Based on what happened, gaslighting seems to fit the bill, in addition to other methods of confinement and control. Again, I have every right to question based on the information in the public domain and unlike Barkha Dutt, I am NOT privy to the statements from Rhea’s psychotherapist and I am not disclosing private mental health information. Based on the evidence in the public domain so far and the claims in the FIR, Rhea is the prime suspect in this case. It will indeed be a shocking surprise to the entire nation if it is found in the court of law that she was a loving partner and not an opportunist who eliminated most of Sushant’s ties with his family and friends.

My final point is that of disappointment in Barkha Dutt in this matter. Please understand that I am not attacking all her work. I am very disappointed with the path she chose in this matter. Unless proven in the court of law that Sushant took his own life because of a mental illness that happened without any foul play (gaslighting, blackmail, covert medication, or overt overmedication), this is NOT the example to use to create awareness around mental illness. Even if proven in the court of law, the only thing that can be even remotely used is the awareness aspect of it with the intention to help and never the intimate details of the diagnosis or disclosure of diagnosis from the mental health professional.

Barkha Dutt could have chosen to emphasize the financial angle. Most crimes have a financial angle and when there are so many pointers (from regular cash withdrawals and large expenses to shell companies), she chose to NOT focus on them and that does reek of agenda.

As a fellow feminist and an intellectual, I am very disappointed today and you will lose a lot of credibility amongst your readership. You still have an opportunity to amend by reflecting on the choice you made and perhaps apologizing for not deliberating on this enough before hitting publish. Perhaps, that will restore some trust in your journalism. Please understand again that this is not a personal attack but an expression of disappointment in the approach you took in the aftermath of our beloved Sushant’s death.

  1. 1) Therapist appointments are between patient and the therapist. No one else is present usually. Unless it is a minor. Even in case of minor, parents come in towards the end of appointment, if there are some family issues or some special communication.
    2) Therapist/counsellor can lose their license in the country they practice if they go on media (or elsewhere) and disclose patient’s information.
    3) Anti-depressant and anti-anxiety medication combination can be fatal if not properly administered. The doses also need to be gradually built up. And again there has to be slow tapering off of the meds. You cannot suddenly take and sudddenly stop it. Even if SSR had depression, for it to suddenly reach 911 critical level in one single year is very difficult to believe. Same thing with bipolar. It takes years to manifest and diagnosis. And if there is any truth to the fact that he was very ill, If he was indeed so badly off, suicidal lets say, WHY did the leading psychiatrist not hospitalize him and put him in suicide watch. That should have been done by any of these psychiatrists.
    4) Whatever meds Siddharth was administering, it made SSR sleep most of the time. This is according to Siddharth himself.
    5) I hope Republic TV’s arnab not do his messy analysis on TV, screaming at witness and scaring them off permanently. He is not court or judge. He is doing all this for TRP. Same with Kangana. These ppl are creating too much noise!

    • First n foremost nobody believes n it’s very evident by now that Sushant wasn’t depressed at all people around him played out the game very well. Barkha should have some respect for her “journalism” if at all she cannot have respect for an individual. There is only too much noise we just DEMAND JUSTICE FOR SUSHANT PERIOD. ENOUGH OF NOISE WE DEMAND A CBI ENQ ASAP PERIOD.

      • Sushant’s age of diagnosis is too far away from the average age of 21-25 at diagnosis. Most times, parents and teachers from the teenage years have insight to share. Rhea did not know him then. This was a bogus diagnosis. Susan Walker Moffat’s degree work and graduation timeframes indicate not only are her qualifications outdated by today’s standards but also not the requisite quals needed to arrive at this diagnosis. Moreover, she never consulted with people who knew him in his teenage years and early to mid 20s to arrive at her conclusion. Most concerning are the methods used for treatment where she uses hypnosis! That’s typically done by administering mind altering and habit forming drugs. Her interest in establishing her practice in India is not unlike many who find India an easy market because of the easy belief system of going into trances, performing strange ceremonies and talk of being possessed.

  2. Absuletly agreed our generation is in such a
rush that we all have some or the other sadness , but depression comes if you are tremendously tourchred mentally or for a great loss and so on so ,but in case of Ssr their was nothing to be depressed he was, I would rather say over blessed that at the age of 34 he achieved most of his dreams he have beutiful family support and plenty of works to be bussy .What could be his depression reasone. And if their was any being a partner she should discuss with SSR family that your son health is not good can I give him a treatment. But she never had such intentions . Ankita n SSR brokeup long time ago but I’m sure if she would see such changes in sush she would definently consult her family first . And family is well supportive they are modern mentality mind set . Being a family they have the right to know what was for Rhea giving sush medicines without consulting them for once . If she have any clear justification just let her come in public domain I would rather name Arnab Goswami Puchta hai Bharat and answer Sush family and his fans. I dont respect such kind of women . I know Sushant will get justice it’s a foul play we fans know this very well, bcz we are neutral and trying to understand both side statements .

  3. Thats what happens when one using medications to slow down the brain activity. They make you numb, person stutters, they can’t thing or act clearly, and they sleep most of the time.
Some drugs also make you gain weight too.
One can have anxiety issues, and incorrect medication can make it worse too,
I have a brother how suffers from mental health issues, personality disorder. Sometimes he feels better, but thats very short lived. He is alive.
Being depressed, anxious, personality disorder Does Not Guarantee someone committed suicide.

Here it can be a case where Rhea administered drugs to Sushant to control him, so she can use him for money, life style and contacts. This is a possibility.

And for sure, Sushant’s family needs to press legal charges against the doctor, at the earliest !

  4. I never though Barkha can go so low. No one will believe your credibility. Please stop playing women card. A criminal is a criminal no matter he or she. If you are a real journalist stand with the truth. That’s all we expect. If you don’t know much about this please stay out of it. Learn something from Kangana… Who kept this case alive when no one was talking? She wants SSR to get justice. Just because you see some women crying you start taking her side, is that kind of journalist you have learned? I am woman and I am ashamed of what Reha gang did to SSR. Be honest, and help brining the truth out. Don’t be this B******** like a B**** who killed such a talented man like SSR. Try to find her gang. What kind of racket she is running? Save other family from these suicide gang members. That will be a big help to the country. What you are doing is opportunity to bring your viewer back but this is back firing to you. Whoever left will also run away from you. Think before you stand with criminals.

Cutting the victim off from family and friends, making him believe that there is something wrong with him are all signs of a narcissit’s handiwork. Justice is blind yet millions of Indians are hoping that Sushant will get it someday….even if he doesnt get it. Truth remains..Sushant will forever be remembered for everything he stands for..a brilliant mind, charming actor, a kind and generous soul whose life was snuffed before time.

  6. It’s so sham of this journalist Barkha to comply with the so called psychotherapist who’s not even a doctor! It’s a serious thing to look over. Just because she’s a journalist and a so called feminist, doesn’t mean she has the right to support every other women right there and disclose (if any) or talk about someone’s mental health in the public domain. This is extremely unlawful and she must be convicted by law! I appeal to you on behalf of the fans that, do take a serious legal action against her so that such activities don’t repeat again!
In fact this can also be an attempt by the victim to play safe , I hope you will investigate deep in this matter.

  7. Well said Sir!! Just hate how people are being so opportunist in this issue & getting their vested interests served. Less than a month back except for the public & family members no one chose to say a word & now after 1/2 media channel started questioning & bringing other facts (may need enquiry) which may have led to this tragic end we hv started to hear ppl standing for everyone & everything else but SSR.
Ofourse when there had been discrepancies in the investigation & testimonies being presented we do can demand a fair enquiry & as many facts are being presented, we have a right to question as public whose only vested interest is their love & respect for SSR, demanding a fair probe. Because if facts will go unnoticed in such a high profile case what can a common man expect from the system .
& coming back to Ms Dutt & Ms Walker… As much as stating guilty, giving a clean chit to someone being reported in an FIR doesn’t seem a responsible act . In the same manner considering there was a mental illness going on which could be a result of any genetic/ environment interaction or any other factor including administration of some drugs without person’s knowledge z not a possibility to be ruled out. He may have a mental illness we are not refuting it but we need to be a little considerate of the other factors that may be involved & if the therapist could share the diagnosis & could put right to confidentiality at stake she cud also have specified how many episodes of depression & hypomania he suffered & what was the result of therapeutic intervention, was there any assessment if lethality of suicidal behaviour. Why the accused being such a mother figure & sole caregiver left the patient during this vulnerable time. Sorry Ms therapist & Ms Jornalist, appears little weird to us as a common man & proves her being an inefficient & irresponsible caregiver.

So he came to the world for a certain reason, did a lot of good in his life, and in his death.

Possible to file a case against the doc and set a precedent so no other doctor breaks confidentiality? This doctor anyway has lost all her credibility and, hopefully, her patiens, due to the complete unconcern about her patient’s privacy. If at all Sushant was mentally sick, according to her, he and Rhea both went to great lengths to keep it a secret. Did she have Rhea’s and the family’s permission to go public? How can people with deep mental health issues go to the doc if they see docs breaking all ethics left, right and centre?

I would argue the timing of Susan coming out with this news and more ever with the important question of why she choose Barkha only for delivering her thoughts. Also on Rhea, of course she wanted to show that SSR was ill and went to any lengths to pretend to be a ‘motherly’ figure as that was a part of her plan! We all know that.Someone should really take Susan to court and also Barkha for trying to malign SSR and breaking the client confidentiality act when it was not asked by the concerned authorities.#JusticeForSushantSinghRajput

  18. Thanks for a very succinct reply to yellow journalist and ambulance chaser Barkha. As someone whose brother dealt with bipolar illness, SSR doesn’t seem to show any signs prior to October 2019. Bipolar illness doesn’t start suddenly and takes a long time. Also, therapists don’t diagnose but only counsel. This lady might have just accepted the right or wrong diagnosis at face value, so how can she make such a claim . As always yellow journalists are there to as always.

  21. this is so shameful…instead of talking to Sushant’s psychologist, you are trying to add fuel to the fire of Lies & Stories. From what is there in the public domain – Sushant was seeing both a psychologist & a psychiatrist & thats the correct way to go about his problems, meaning Rhea was helping Sushant correctly. Please if you ever cared for Sushant – dont go chasing after a 15 Crores which was never in his account or add to the Lies & fake stories. If you care for Sushant talk to his psychologist & Psychiatrist – try to understand what Sushant was going through, even though you did not care to find what Sushant was going through while he was alive, do it atleast now, so that his soul will rest in peace. During all these there are many of us who thought that Sushants family understood the truth – but looks like the 2 brother in law of Sushant are the ones who are aiding in spreading lies & fake stories instead of truth. The other police brother in law made up fake charges against Rhea & now you attacking Barkha. Highly unfortunate that the very people who cared for Sushant while he was alive is been demonized by the people who did not care for him while he was alive. Please retrospect & think over your actions, dont destroy Sushant’s memory & his legacy.

    • Mam/Sir,

My brother was suffering from depression so I would like to put some sense into your mind about how it actually works.
Its perfectly your choice to speak on behalf of anyone you want to but atleast be informed.
My brother was suffering from depression and the entire family like mother, father and siblings are required to know the root cause behind any mental disorder, they take day long sessions for weeks and months so that the counselling and medication can happen properly.

For once even if we believe that the Psychiatrist is not speaking out of pressure and he actually was visiting her, how could she know he was a bipolar in a couple of meetings?? Secondly, how can you hide such a thing from the immediate family? And how did this Psychiatrist who is just a counsellor started medication without even knowing the family history of the patient. Because
      1. If Sushant was actually Bipolar and depressed and if we agree to what the Psychiatrist is saying here then he was not capable enough to be trusted on if he is saying the right things.
2.Rhea was not family so she certainly could not give family related information.

And you here making this comment don’t know or didn’t know Sushant more than his family.
Also, please read the entire article completely, its looking like as if you are here just to comment based on a biased opinion.

People who pretend that they care for Sushant after his death are throwing muck at people who cared for Sushant while he was alive. Where was this brother in law when Sushant was alive & suffering…instead of trying to understand what sushant was going through why the need now to pull down people whom Sushant trusted & who cared for Sushant whole heartedly.

      • I know that Susan Walker is a Psychologist and not a Paychiatrist , and also know the difference the two, what are you trying to prove here? In any of the cases, she is ought to inform the family because any me tal illness is fatal and that is a proven fact, so hiding the whole scenario from the family makes sense?
It is like hiding 4th stage cancer from the patient’s family!

Vishal Singh and Sushant’s sister lived in US, but the other three sisters and the father lives in India who knew nothing about Sushant’s mental health condition. how can you say that the own family did not care for Sushant when he himself has quoted that he is very loved many a times in his interviews.
You are not his famliy, the people who are suffering the most is not Rhea, not the fans but Sushant’s family!
How can you say something this insensitive, it’s a life time of grieving they will have to do and Sushant is not coming back for them no matter what is the conclusion !! And the family just wants justice for him.
Please be a little sensitive while making these comments.

      • in your first comment you mentioned Susan is a psychiatrist…and how she started medication…FYI, psychologist do not prescribe medicines, thats done by psychiatrist….psychologist only do counselling…and having depression or been bi-polar is not fatal, its curable through counselling & medication…thats why sushant was meeting a psychologist & a psychiatrist..IT IS NOT FATAL LIKE 4TH STAGE CANCER..where do you get all this lies ???.and you still claim you know the difference between psychologist & psychiatrist ?? my gawd!! when you are a adult 34 year old living independently you dont tell everything to your parents, he was live in relationship with Rhea & she took care of him..its not easy when your partner has depression & diagonised as bi-polar but she faithfully & diligently took care of him. So stop throwing muck on people who took care of Sushant..anybody who really care for him, will try to find out what sushant was going through before his suicide..not run after an imaginary 15 crores or throw muck & lies & fake stories at people who cared for sushant when he was alive

But do not argue with me when you don’t know where the other person is coming from, any case of mental illness is fatal because depression / bipolar disorder/ Schizophrenia or any other mental disorder leads to self harm including suicide.
My very own brother committed suicide after being into depression after an year, so don’t preach your teachings over here okay.
And mind you he was 29 years old when he died, an adult! So family is called upon by the Psycholgists so that they would have a clear idea of any history of trauma or abuse or anything related to the patient’s mental health.

You were there to see if she was taking care of Sushant or not, no right??
Just as you are not sure of what Vishal Singh is saying , the same way you are not sure if the Psychologists is saying the truth or if Rhea is saying the truth!

You are saying as if you were there seeing it all !!
What he was going through or what led to his murder/suicide is what the family is trying to find out, finance is just another angle , there are many other suspicions which the family has raised.

Rhea Chakraborty has fled the scene, you see???

      08 June – Rhea leaves
08 June – His sister comes to stay with him
08 June – His Manager Disha commits suicide
12 June – His sister leaves
14 June – Sushant commits suicide
As per his friend, after his manager committed suicide, sushant was very anxious as all the news reports that came out labelled it as Sushant singh manager. He was worried why they where naming him when he had met her only once. She was just a replacement from the company that managed sushant & there was no direct & long relation between sushant & Disha. For a person who is under depression, that kind of news is a trigger & makes him more anxious..we will never know the exact reason why he suicide, as that is a personal impulsive decision…but PLEASE dont spread lies & fake stories to destroy Sushant’s legacy & his memory..please study all facts before you put out your opinion publicly..!!

In which case, you or SSR’s sister could legally sue her in the US for disclosure of private client information regarding a close family member on TV. She is legally mandated to reveal information only to the Indian police or government authorities if they approach her. If not, the ethics of therapist-client relationship in the US very strictly forbid revealing such details. Your article is excellent; very well presented. Please accept my heartfelt condolences. All of SSR’s sisters and father have continuously been in my prayers since June 14th. Somehow, the resonance I feel with all your grief and loss is unexplainable. SSR is most definitely a very blessed soul. In life, he has touched the hearts of so many, and in the afterlife, he continues to kindle the conscience of the entire Indian nation.

  40. Sushant’s age of diagnosis is too far away from the average age of 21-25 at diagnosis.
